General Information about IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement)

The International Fuel Tax Agreement is an agreement between the 48 contiguous United States and 10 provinces of Canada for the collection and distribution of fuel taxes. IFTA applies to vehicles that travel between two or more jurisdictions (states) and that have a gross or registered weight exceeding 26,000 lbs or that have 3 or more axles.

Who is required to file an IFTA return?

While recreational vehicles are exempt from IFTA, any commerical carriers that travel interstate and meet the vehicle size qualifications are required to register with IFTA.

Quarterly IFTA Return

IFTA license holders must file quarterly fuel tax returns with their base jurisdiction that include:

  • Total miles traveled per jurisdiction (including non-taxable miles).

  • Gallons of fuel used per jurisdiction and in total.

  • The tax paid on all fuel purchases.

  • And the Current Tax rate for each jurisdiction.

Penalty for Late Filing of IFTA return

IFTA reports are due by midnight on the last day of the month following the month in which the quarter closed. Failure to submit your report to your base jurisdiction by this date results in a penalty of $50.00 or 10% of the net liability tax, whichever is greater. Interest also accrues on the tax due at a rate of .4167% per month that the tax remains unpaid.
